Persian Music


Dr. Hossein Omoumi
Dr. Hossein Omoumi entered School of Architecture National University of Iran in 1963. He received his MA degree with honor, and won scholarship from Italian Government to study Architecture in Florence, Italy.

He received his "Doctorate" in Architecture from Florence University. He returned to Iran in 1972 and started to teach Architecture as a professor at the National University of Iran. From 1993 to 2003 he served as Sr. Consulting Architect at OGER Architecture Inc. Paris, France.

Dr. Hossein Omoumi in conjunction with his profession as an architect has devoted his whole life in learning and later on teaching Persian music.

Today he is recognized as a renounce master in Persian Classic Music. He speaks many languages including Persian, English, French, and Italian.

He has conducted many research related to classical Persian music. These have resulted in design and development of a series of lessons. These lessons, called Pish Radif (pre-Radif), which are an introduction to Radif (the reference body of the melodic patterns in Persian music).

This method is unique and takes away the difficulties traditionally faced by many students and teachers of classical Persian music studies.

Dr. Omoumi has number of inventions for his credited including;

  • Conducted research on the Ney resulting in major modifications to this instrument which have solved many technical problems in performing the melodic patterns of the Radif.
  • Designed and manufactured a tuning mechanism for the Tombak and daf (Persian percussion instruments). This mechanical system provides the ability to tune with no adverse effects on the sound of Tombak. These Tombak are being used by professional Persian Tombak players around the world.
  • Elaborated a series of presentation about the structure of classical Persian music using PowerPoint program.
